Why Mallorca Is Different From a Typical Beach Trip
Most beach destinations offer sand, sun, and not much else. Mallorca gives you all three and then some: hidden coves with turquoise water, a historic old town in Palma, and a mountain range that drops straight into the sea.
That mountain range, the Serra de Tramuntana, is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, and it is why a week here never feels repetitive. You can swim in the morning, hike or drive a coastal road in the afternoon, and be at a harbor-side dinner by sunset.
The island also runs year-round, unlike many Mediterranean resort towns that shut down in winter. That makes it easy to find a quieter, better-value trip outside the peak weeks and book a nice hotel.
Practical Tips Before You Book
Best time to visit
| Period | What to expect |
| May to June | Warm, green, and uncrowded. Good for sightseeing and early beach days. |
| July to August | Hottest and busiest, with highs around 30°C and the warmest sea. Book early. |
| September to October | Warm sea, calmer crowds, and often the best overall balance. |
| November to March | Mild and quiet. Some beach venues close, but Palma stays lively. |
For most travelers, late May to June or September to early October is the sweet spot.
What the vibe is like
Mallorca is not one place. The north is rugged and quiet, the east has small family-friendly coves, and the southwest, around Palma and Portals Nous, is polished, with marinas, restaurants, and a more upscale feel.
If you want a relaxed, design-conscious holiday rather than a party scene, the southwest coast is where to base yourself.
Who it suits
- Couples looking for a romantic trip with good food and scenery
- Travelers who like a mix of beach time and exploring
- Anyone who wants a short, easy trip: flights from much of Europe are short, and Palma airport is close to the southwest coast
Getting around
You can enjoy the southwest coast without a car, using taxis and the walkable marina areas. If you want the mountains and the remote coves, rent a car for at least a day or two.
Where to Stay
Where to Stay: The Donna Portals, Portals Nous, 5-star Boutique Hote on Beachfront
If you want the southwest coast, the hotel I’d put at the top of the list is The Donna Portals, a 5-star boutique hotel in Portals Nous. It is built around design and art rather than the usual resort formula.
The hotel was styled by Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, and it shows. The MICHELIN Guide singles out a giant iris sculpture dividing bedroom from bathroom, and themed suites with details like a pinball machine. The building is whitewashed and sculptural, with a rooftop water cascade that lights up after dark.
What you get
- Rooms: 64 rooms, suites, and penthouses, most with private balconies and sea views. Request a sea view when you book.
- Beach: The sea is about 100 meters away, and the Donna Beach club has sunbeds, Bali beds, paddleboards, and kayaks.
- Spa and fitness: A subterranean spa with sauna and hammam, plus a 24-hour gym and complimentary classes.
- Food: Breakfast as a buffet or à la carte. The MICHELIN Guide lists the hotel restaurant as Merchants by the Sea, with a seafood and steak menu on a terrace overlooking the water.
- Year-round: The outdoor pool stays open all year, which suits the shoulder-season trips recommended above.
The art is part of the stay
The Donna Portals doubles as a working art collection, not just a themed hotel. Pieces are placed throughout the public spaces and rooms, and the hotel keeps a catalogue of the collection for guests who want to look into specific works. It gives the hallways and lobby a gallery feel rather than a standard hotel corridor.
Who it suits
This is a good fit for couples and design-minded travelers who want a lively, stylish base instead of a quiet retreat. It is not adults-only: cribs are available free for children under 3, and babysitting is available on request.
Practical details
Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is by 12:00. Free Wi-Fi is included, and private parking with an EV charger is available for a fee. The hotel offers an airport shuttle at extra cost, which you need to arrange directly.

Things to Do Near Portals Nous
Puerto Portals marina is about a 15-minute walk from the hotel, lined with yachts, restaurants, and boutiques, and busiest in the evening when people come out for dinner.
Palma is a 20-minute drive and worth at least a half-day trip. The old town has the Palma Cathedral, narrow medieval streets, and a much wider range of restaurants and shops than the resort towns along the coast.
For beach time beyond the hotel’s own stretch, Cala Portals Vells and Illetas Beach are both short drives away and less crowded than the main tourist beaches further south.
If you have a car for a day, the Tramuntana mountains are reachable within an hour, with the cliffside village of Deià and the coastal drive near Valldemossa among the most photographed spots on the island.
Quick Answers
Do I need a car in Portals Nous?
No, not for the marina, beach, and restaurants nearby. You’ll want one for the mountains or more remote coves.
Is Portals Nous good for a first trip to Mallorca?
Yes. It’s close to Palma, has an easy, polished feel, and works well as a base for day trips around the island.
How far is Palma de Mallorca Airport?
A short drive from Portals Nous, making arrival and departure days easy.
Ready to Book Your Stay
Mallorca’s southwest coast gives you the beach, the marina life, and easy access to Palma and the mountains, all without needing to change hotels. The Donna Portals puts you in the middle of that, with its own stretch of beach and a design that makes the stay itself part of the trip.
What to Pack and Know Before You Go
Mallorca uses the euro, and most hotels and restaurants in Portals Nous and Palma take cards without issue, so you don’t need to carry much cash.
Evenings can be breezy even in summer, especially near the water, so a light layer is worth packing alongside beachwear. Restaurants along the marina lean smart-casual rather than beach-casual once the sun goes down.
If you’re renting a car for a day in the mountains, book it in advance during July and August. Availability gets tight, and prices climb closer to the date.
